CarePlusPartnership recognises that neuropsychiatric disorders affect not only our clients, but also carers and family members. As clients attempt to regain or compensate for lost skills, carers and family may also be trying to adjust to ways in which their loved one has changed.
For example, our clients are likely to be more dependent on spouses, parents and other people close to them than they were prior to their condition, bringing new pressures to relationships. Supporting these relationships is an important aspect of our care programme. We offer psychological support, practical assistance and introductions to existing carers’ groups.
We believe in regular communication with carers and family members. This means involving them as much as possible in the admission process and the individual client care plan and updating them regularly on the client’s progress. We also consider the possibility of a client going home at weekends and encouraging family and carers to visit as often as possible. For an example of how we work with families, read our case study about
Sunil.
When clients are ready to leave a CarePlus residential centre, we aim to work with the client and their carers/family members to help resettle them in accommodation that meets their needs. Our priority is to reduce conditions that leave them vulnerable to relapse.
